A snapshot /random photograph that I like and hope you do too on this wonderful Saturday.
Is this a photograph in a frame?
This weeks featured favorite photograph was taken while ‘wandering‘ in the town of Gnjilane, Kosovo with a former colleague. Gnjilane is another town in Kosovo that has kept its old world look and is a fun place to poke around and explore.
My friend Donnie likes to keep his head shaved and has a favorite barbershop in Gnjilane he wanted to visit to get a shave and a haircut. Actually it was a shave and a shave. So we made our way to the shop which was nestled in between some other small shop fronts on a side street.
The barber and his son greeted us with big smiles as we came in and asked us in Albanian if we wanted a ‘macchiato‘ which is a popular coffee drink here. I love the hospitality you encounter in Kosovo. The ethnic Albanians are very grateful for America helping them out during the war in 1999 and they are not afraid to show how much they respect that. They are always fascinated and curious about foreigners anyway.
So, the barber sent his son off to get us our macchiatos. While waiting for his son to come back, the barber attempted to engage us in a conversation; however, his English-speaking skills were nonexistent as were our Albanian language skills. Luckily a lot of the Kosovaars speak German as well, so I asked him if he spoke German. Bingo! I got to practice my speaking skills with him and we carried on a conversation instead of just experiencing that smile a a lot a each other and weird everyone just looks at each other type situation.
The barber’s son shows up with a serving tray in hand and we all enjoyed our macchiatos together and a little more conversation. Then it was time for Donnie’s shave x 2. The barber decides he is going to have his son work on Donnie. So, Donnie settles into the barber chair and the shave prep work begins. A nice hot water-soaked towel was prepared and placed in a wrap fashion on Donnie’s head. Following this, the son started to lather Donnie’s head up to prepare for the shave. After he completed the lathering, he got a new razor blade out and fixed it into the handle of the straight razor. The shaving begins…
Meanwhile, the barber and I had run out of things to say, so I started to look around the shop. I had my camera with me as usual and was snapping photographs of the shop while Donnie got his shave. That’s when I noticed the homemade hand mirror that caught Donnie’s reflection. I saw this as a unique opportunity to capture a different kind of photo especially with all the barber props in view.
I hope you enjoyed this weeks SNAPSHOT SATURDAY photograph. I appreciate any comments you may have!
Have a great weekend!
